Compact HF RFID Read Head, RS485 Modbus RTU, IP67: overview
The IH-140 is the smallest and lightest of our 13.56 MHz RS485 read heads, measuring Ø30 × 60 mm and weighing about 80 g as a complete set. Its threaded cylindrical barrel clamps into a bracket with two lock nuts and connects through an M12 cable, which makes it a good fit for crowded fixtures, small workpiece carriers and tool holders where the tag passes close to the head.
It reads ISO/IEC 15693 and ISO/IEC 14443A tags through an integrated PCB antenna behind a black sensing cap. Rated read distance is 0–50 mm depending on the tag, and about 35 mm with a Ø30 mm industrial tag, so mount the head close to the tag path. If your layout needs more clearance, the M30 IH-120 and the square IH-130 are rated up to 80 mm.
The IP67 housing is rated for operation from –40 to +70 °C and for ESD of ±10 kV air and ±8 kV contact discharge, suitable for machine frames and wet or dusty line areas.
Integration notes
The head runs from 24 V DC and draws no more than 2 W. It communicates over RS485 at 9600–115200 bit/s using Modbus RTU, so it can connect directly to a PLC serial module or reach an Ethernet network through an RS485-to-Ethernet gateway. The M12 connector takes a female-connector cable harness. An orange LED blinks to show operating status, firmware is updated over the serial port, and an API kit with C, C# and Java sample programs is available for bench testing.

IH-140 FAQ
What read distance should I plan for?
The IH-140 is rated 0–50 mm depending on the tag, and about 35 mm with a Ø30 mm industrial tag. For more clearance, the IH-120 and IH-130 heads are rated up to 80 mm.
How is it mounted?
Pass the threaded barrel through a bracket hole and clamp it with the two lock nuts, with the black sensing cap facing the tag path. Keep surrounding metal away from the cap to preserve range.
Does it support Modbus TCP?
Not directly. The IH-140 has a single RS485 port that carries Modbus RTU. For an Ethernet network, place an RS485-to-Ethernet gateway between the head and the PLC, or use the IH-110 reader, which has Modbus TCP built in.
What cable does it use?
An M12 female-connector cable harness carrying 24 V DC and the RS485 pair. Ask for the pin assignment and specify the cable length on your RFQ.
Can the head write data to tags?
The published rating covers reading only. If your process must write lot or step data to the tag, contact us to confirm write support and write distance for your tag type, or use the IH-110, which is rated to write at up to 100 mm on ISO 15693.
