BLE 5.1 Dual-Frequency RFID Module, EM + MIFARE: overview

The XM-170 adds Bluetooth Low Energy 5.1 to a dual-frequency reader module, so one board can accept 125 kHz EM cards, 13.56 MHz smart cards and phones. Card support covers EM4100/4102/4200/4305/4450 plus MIFARE Classic, DESFire EV1/EV2, Ultralight and Ultralight C, FeliCa, ICODE, CEPAS, CPU cards and NFC Forum Type 1–5 tags. HID formats are not included; the XM-190 is the BLE module with HID Prox-compatible reading.

Over BLE the module supports Bluetooth virtual cards, where a phone app issued by your platform acts as the credential, and transparent data pass-through between phone and host at up to 300 bytes/s. That rate suits commands, configuration and status messages rather than bulk transfers. Typical products are EV chargers, residential door stations, elevator panels and service terminals that want an app-based option next to cards.

Integration notes

The 6-pin, 2.0 mm pitch header carries 5 V DC, GND, a 3.3 V TTL UART at 115200 bps and USB full-speed data (12 Mbps). Antennas are external on a 4-pin, 1.25 mm connector ordered LF, LF, HF, HF: a 490 µH ±10 µH coil at 125 kHz and a 50 Ω antenna at 13.56 MHz. As with any BLE design, avoid fully metal enclosures around the module. Current is ≤ 190 mA with the RF field on and ≤ 30 mA off. The board measures 30 × 16 × 8.8 mm, weighs about 2.0 g and is rated from –40 to +85 °C. Firmware upgrades run over the serial port, and CE, FCC, RoHS and Japan Radio Law approvals are listed for the module.

XM-170 FAQ

What can the Bluetooth link do?

Two things: accept Bluetooth virtual cards presented by a phone app, and pass data transparently between a phone and your host at up to 300 bytes/s.

Does it read HID Prox or iCLASS credentials?

No. Choose the XM-190 for HID Prox-compatible reading with BLE, or the XM-180 for iCLASS/Seos- and Prox-compatible reading with BLE.

Do I need my own phone app?

Yes. Bluetooth virtual cards are issued by your app or credential platform; ask for the BLE protocol documentation when you request samples.

What antennas does it need?

A 490 µH ±10 µH coil for 125 kHz and a 50 Ω antenna for 13.56 MHz, both external on the 4-pin, 1.25 mm connector (LF pins first).

What are the power requirements?

5 V DC on the host header or 4.3–5.5 V over USB, with up to 190 mA drawn while the RF field is on.
