125 kHz HID Prox-Compatible & EM Module, UART/USB: overview

The XM-120 is a 125 kHz-only reader module for devices that serve proximity-card sites. It reads HID Prox-compatible credentials together with EM4100, EM4102, EM4200, EM4305 and EM4450 cards and fobs, covering the EM and prox-format badges still issued at many offices, residential blocks and car parks. Typical hosts are door readers, visitor kiosks, barrier-gate terminals, elevator panels and building-automation controllers.

It uses the same 30 × 16 × 9.2 mm outline and the same published pin map as our dual-frequency XM-200, so one host PCB footprint can take either module. That leaves room to offer a 13.56 MHz-capable build later without a board respin; check command-set differences in the documentation before swapping. The module weighs about 1.8 g and is rated from –40 to +85 °C, which suits outdoor pedestals and unheated enclosures.

Integration notes

Power (5 V DC), ground, a 3.3 V TTL UART at 115200 bps and USB full-speed (12 Mbps) data lines share a 6-pin, 2.0 mm pitch header, and Windows, Linux, Android and macOS hosts are supported over USB. The external coil connects to the LF pins of the 4-pin, 1.25 mm antenna connector and should measure 490 µH ±10 µH. The HF pins exist because the pin map is shared across the family; this version is specified for 125 kHz only. Current draw is ≤ 180 mA with the RF field active and ≤ 30 mA idle. A configuration tool is available, firmware updates run over the serial port, and CE, FCC, RoHS and Japan Radio Law approvals are listed for the module.

XM-120 FAQ

Does the XM-120 read 13.56 MHz cards?

No. It is specified for 125 kHz credentials only. For MIFARE, DESFire or FeliCa as well, choose the dual-frequency XM-200, which uses the same outline and pin map.

Which 125 kHz credentials does it read?

HID Prox-compatible cards and fobs, plus EM4100, EM4102, EM4200, EM4305 and EM4450 transponders.

What coil should I use?

An external 125 kHz antenna with 490 µH ±10 µH inductance, wired to the LF pins of the 4-pin, 1.25 mm antenna connector.

Can I connect it to a PC without a microcontroller?

Yes. The USB data lines are on the host header, and Windows 10/8.1/8/7, Linux, Android and macOS are listed as supported hosts.

How much current does it draw?

Up to 180 mA with the RF field on and up to 30 mA with it off, from 5 V DC on the header or 4.3–5.5 V over USB.
