13.56 MHz Multi-Protocol RFID Module, Wiegand/UART Output: overview

The HF-230 is a 13.56 MHz multi-protocol RFID module with a selectable Wiegand or 3.3 V UART output. It is built for OEMs adding card reading to terminals, kiosks, handhelds, keyboards and fare-collection equipment. It handles ISO/IEC 14443A/B, ISO/IEC 15693 and ISO/IEC 18092 credentials, including MIFARE Classic, MIFARE DESFire EV1/EV2, MIFARE Ultralight and Ultralight C, NTAG2xx and ICODE, plus NFC Forum Type 1, 2, 4 and 5 tags. The -FL versions add FeliCa.

Four versions cover two choices. First, the protocol set: standard (-M) or with FeliCa (-M-FL). Second, the antenna: the on-board antenna keeps the design to a single board, while -EXT versions provide a 50 Ω antenna port so you can place your own coil where users present the card. All four share the 47 × 26 × 4.5 mm outline and the same 5-pin host connector.

The module either scans continuously and reports every card it sees, or stays idle until the host sends a read command. UART speed is adjustable from 9600 to 115200 bps (default 115200). An SDK is available for Windows, Android and Linux, a configuration utility lets you change module parameters, and the firmware is upgradeable. Read distance is 0–5 cm, depending on the card and the mounting environment.

Integration notes

Power and data share a 5-pin, 1.25 mm pitch connector: +5 V DC, TXD/D1, RXD/D0, GND and an active-low RESET. Because Wiegand D0/D1 use the same pins as the UART, the module outputs one protocol at a time; tell us the Wiegand bit format your controller expects when you order. Signal lines run at 3.3 V, so check input thresholds on 5 V hosts. The -EXT versions add a 2-pin, 1.25 mm antenna connector (TX1, TX2). Budget up to 150 mA while reading and 120 mA in standby. The module is listed as RoHS compliant and operates from –20 to +60 °C.

  • SDK for Windows, Android and Linux; configurable parameters and upgradeable firmware

Where the HF-230 is used

  • EV chargers that start a session from a MIFARE or DESFire card over a 3.3 V UART
  • Turnstile and fare-gate readers that pass card data to an existing Wiegand controller
  • Library, locker or kiosk terminals that must read both ISO14443 cards and ISO15693 tags
  • Handhelds and tablets for markets where FeliCa cards are in circulation (-FL versions)
  • Devices with metal front panels, where an -EXT version lets the antenna sit behind a plastic window

HF-230 FAQ

What is the difference between the four HF-230 versions?

HF-230-M and HF-230-M-EXT read the standard protocol set without FeliCa; the -FL versions add FeliCa. Versions ending in -EXT replace the on-board antenna with a 50 Ω external antenna connector.

Can the module output Wiegand and UART at the same time?

No. Wiegand D0/D1 share pins with the UART RXD/TXD lines, so one output is active at a time. Tell us which output and Wiegand bit format you need when ordering.

How far does it read?

The specified read distance is 0–5 cm. The actual figure depends on the card type and on the installation environment, such as nearby metal or the enclosure material.

Which platforms does the SDK support?

An SDK is available for Windows, Android and Linux. Module parameters can be changed with the configuration utility, and the firmware is upgradeable.

Can I drive it from a 5 V microcontroller?

The supply is 5 V DC, but the TXD/RXD (and shared Wiegand) lines use 3.3 V levels. Confirm your host accepts 3.3 V inputs and add level shifting if its outputs are 5 V.
