13.56 MHz USB NFC Reader Module, ISO15693 & FeliCa Options: overview

The HF-220 is a USB reader module for device makers who want multi-standard 13.56 MHz card reading in handhelds, tablets, PCs, displays, service terminals and ticketing equipment. It handles ISO/IEC 14443A/B, ISO/IEC 15693 and ISO/IEC 18092 (NFC) cards, covering MIFARE Classic, DESFire EV1/EV2, Ultralight and Ultralight C, NTAG2xx, ICODE, CPU cards and NFC Forum tags.

Four builds cover two choices. First, card support: the standard build leaves out FeliCa, while the -FC builds add FeliCa for markets and card schemes that depend on it. Second, antenna: the standard boards carry an on-board antenna, and the -EXT boards bring out a 2-pin, 1.25 mm pitch connector for an external 50 Ω antenna when the reading point has to sit away from the electronics.

Rated read distance is 0–5 cm depending on the card and mounting. The module can run in active mode, reading cards automatically, or in passive mode, where it reads only when the host sends a command.

Integration notes

All builds use a 5-pin, 1.25 mm pitch connector: 5 V, USB D–, USB D+, ground and an active-low reset. The USB link runs at 12 Mbps from a 4.3–5.5 V supply, drawing up to 150 mA while reading and up to 120 mA on standby. Listed host systems are Windows 10/8.1/8/7, Linux, Android and macOS, with SDKs for Windows, Android and Linux. Firmware can be upgraded, and a management tool handles configuration. The board measures 47 × 26 × 4.5 mm and weighs about 4 g.

More features

  • SDKs for Windows, Android and Linux; firmware upgradable
  • 47 × 26 × 4.5 mm, about 4 g, USB-powered at 4.3–5.5 V

HF-220 FAQ

What is the difference between the -FC and standard builds?

The -FC builds add FeliCa card reading; all other card support is the same. Choose -FC if your users carry FeliCa-based cards.

When should I pick an -EXT build?

Choose -EXT when the read point must sit away from the board, such as behind a bezel or display frame. These builds have a 2-pin, 1.25 mm pitch connector for an external 50 Ω antenna; the standard builds use the on-board antenna.

Which operating systems and SDKs are supported?

Listed host systems are Windows 10, 8.1, 8 and 7, Linux, Android and macOS. SDKs are provided for Windows, Android and Linux.

What read distance can I expect?

0–5 cm, depending on the card type and how the module is mounted.

Does it read 125 kHz cards?

No, it is a 13.56 MHz-only module. For 125 kHz EM cards in the same 47 × 26 mm footprint, see the HF-210 dual-frequency builds.
